Description
The mission of the SMRC is to eliminate domestic violence and sexual assault in our community through intervention services, prevention education and social change.
Melanie Montoya, co-director of the San Miguel Resource Center, has identified five needs facing our communities that are in serious need of attention:
1) COST OF LIVING -- This includes rentals and home ownership prices, which for most residents are very high
2) JOB DEVELOPMENT -- Particularly in the West End of Montrose County (Nucla & Naturita) and Norwood
3) TRANSITIONAL HOUSING -- For those leaving abusive relationships/domestic situations. Availability, cost, length of stay are all factors
4) TREATMENT FOR SERIOUS MENTAL ILLNESS -- There is a lack of qualified professionals in our community who are able to effectively deal with this issue. In-depth assessments are needed.
5) LEGAL RESOURCES -- Lack of access to legal counsel for low-income families and individuals. Immigration process is prohibitively expensive. Custody battles in abusive relationships are also very expensive.
